Due to negative global economic trends, the port of Ploce throughput fall in 2009, like in other world ports, was significant compared to 2008. Total of 2.868.805 tons of cargo was handled, which represents a fall of about 40 percent. Such fall can be attributed also to the fact that the comparing year 2008 was a record year in port history, with more than 5 million tons of various goods handled. In the last year a decline in all types of goods, and especially in bulk and liquid cargoes was recorded, as the global recession sharply affected its main clients in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Italy. The container throughput was 25.931 TEU, which is 25 percent less than the year before. In 2009 the highest monthly throughput was realised in December, which may be a sign of recovery of economy in the port of Ploce gravitational area.
