2008 will be recorded as the year when the port of Ploče reached more than 5 million tons of throughput. Throughput of goods in the port of Ploče for the year 2008 has reached the amount of 5.142.440 tons of various goods, which represents an increase by 22 % compared to the last year. Thereby, the forecasts at the beginning of the business year were completely accurate. In the structure of goods the biggest increase was in dry bulk cargoes (coal, petrol coke, alumina and coke), by 30%. These goods make up 78% of the port’s total throughput, owing to intensive transhipment of both the coal for Italian thermal power plants and the petrol coke for “Dalmacijacement”, and also because of providing services to large port users in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Arcelor Mittal Zenica, GIKIL Lukavac, “Birač” Zvornik and “Aluminij” Mostar). It must be stressed that in the general cargoes there is a continuous growing trend in container throughput. The throughput was 35.163 TEU what represents the increase of 16,5 % compared to the last year.
