Intensive investment activities are being carried out in the port of Ploče regarding the construction of the port terminals and quality improvement of the overall port infrastructure. Upon signature of the Contract between the Port of Ploče Authority and “Konstruktor Inženjering” d.d. Split in November 2007 for the Phase I of Container Terminal construction, the contractor commenced with civil works in the beginning of January 2008. 280-meter long operative quay with complete infrastructure will be built on a total land area of 38.000 m2, including RO-RO ramp, sea basin with a depth of 13,5 m for reception of container ships, and service-stacking area that will enable annual container throughput of 60.000 TEU. By the intensive activities, the Contractor completed preparation works on the site, soil consolidation by execution of gravel piles with total length of 30.000 m, which represents 30% of the total quantity of the piles, and undersea dredging work in the sea basin with the volume of dredging of 50.000 m3, which represents 10% of the required work under this item. The most important works should commence promptly – execution of 215 reinforced concrete and steel piles that are going to be embedded to a depth of 42 m. Deadline for completion of all works is contracted till the end of 2009, with value of EUR 34,5 million. Detail designs are drafted by “Rijekaprojekt Inženjering” d.o.o., supervision is performed by “IGH-PC” Split, while “Konstruktor Inženjering” d.d. has already engaged i.e. it plans to involve a large number of subcontractors, including a local firm “Luka Ploče-Gradnja” that will be responsible for dredging works in the sea basin. Also the preparation works for the construction of the Bulk Cargo Terminal infrastructure are being executed. The location permit was obtained; drafting of preliminary and main designs are expected to be completed by October this year. Afterwards, a building permit shall be obtained and the bidding procedure for the selection of the most favorable contractor shall be carried out. Commencement of these highly demanding works is scheduled for mid-2009, which shall be completed within 2,5 years after. The technological equipment project shall be carried simultaneously, and the future operator “Luka Ploče” d.d. shall be included in the drafting process to avoid any discrepancies between equipment and infrastructure. For the purpose of the port terminals construction almost 2 million m3 of a stone material obtained from the highway construction route Šestanovac-Ploče will be dispatched to the port area. So far around 650.000 m3 of the material was transported, and approximately more than 600 trucks a day enter the port to unload the material at various locations. Also several other significant projects like the port information system design, entrance complex at the future main gate to the port area, upgrade of the telecommunication network, and other port infrastructure works are underway.
