The Port of Ploce is located in the southern part of the Adriatic Coast at 43° 03'N and 17°26'E and has therefore been proclamed, by a decision of the Croatian Government, a cargo port of special importance for the Republic of Croatia. Owing to its location, this port is of exceptional significance for the economy of the neighbouring state Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as for the partners from Serbia and Montenegro, Hungary and other countries of the Central Europe. It is located in a bay enclosed from the south and south-west by the peninsula of Peljesac, representing thereby a natural breakwater. The port of Ploce is directly connected to the following traffic aspects:
Road traffic
The skeleton of the road connections is represented by:
o The Adriatic Highway stretching from Trieste, via Rijeka, Split up to the extreme point of the Republic of Croatia. This major route is a part of the European road-net and is marked as E-65.
o The main artery Hungary- Osijek-B.Samac-Zenica-Sarajevo-Mostar-Metkovic-Ploce which bears the mark E-73 and represents the shortest and the most convenient traffic link between the Baltic and the Adriatic Sea.
Railway traffic
Stretching in the north-south direction there is the railway track Sarajevo -Ploce (195 km) which represents a part of the railway route of the C branch (Budapest - Osijek- B.Samac-Sarajevo-Ploce 809 km long) of the Fifth Paneuropean corridor (Venice - Trieste -Budapest - Uzgorod - Lvov ) making thereby the port of Ploce a sea port of this branch.
Maritime traffic
The location of the port of Ploce enables a good-quality maritime connection with the cities of the Adriatic Coast and Italy, as well as with the ports of the entire world. A special quality has been obtained by the opening of the weekly feeder line which connects the port of Ploce to Malta and Italian hub ports Taranto and Gioa Tauro.
Air traffic
The airports in Split (127 km) and Dubrovnik (120 km) enable connections with all the airports in the world.
